About Katie

Katie has extensive experience of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy and post-operative rehabilitation. She graduated from university in Birmingham in 2003 with an honours degree in Sports Science and a PGCE in Physical Education 2004. She continued her studies at the University of Ulster where she attained an MSc in Pre-registration Physiotherapy in 2006. She has assimilated 15 years of experience in both the private and sports sectors.  Katie is currently completing an MSc in Sports and Exercise Medicine at UUJ to further her knowledge.

 

Katie has worked with elite athletes from the IFA Northern Ireland Senior Men’s and Women’s squads, Liverpool FC Academy and the Ulster Rugby Academy.  Katie is responsible for pitch side training management, as well as clinical support. Her clinical interests predominantly lie within non-operative management of musculoskeletal conditions and sport injuries…

Acupuncture

Acupuncture refers to a broad scope of techniques, based upon traditional Chinese medicine, involving inserting the needles to stimulate the flow of energy (or chi) through meridian channels.  Katie is fully trained and certified by the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists.  She will always gain your verbal and written consent prior to treatment.   Acupuncture is only used as one part of a comprehensive treatment plan that also involves hands-on mobilisation, exercise and other techniques.

Physio-Led Pilates

Katie is able to combine current physiotherapy research and the original Pilates exercise method to provide a safe and extremely effective exercise approach used in the treatment of spinal and joint problems. It is a most powerful tool used in the recovery of core stability and strength in people with recurring or chronic pain.

 

Non-physiotherapist personal trainers and Pilates teachers are trained in normal biomechanics but NOT the pathology of injuries or the affects of chronic pain or abnormal mechanics or postures.

Post Operative Rehabilitation

Your surgery is only the first step towards your recovery.  You will normally will be given a post-operative rehabilitation program and the hospital will provide simple exercises to minimise complications, such as chest infection or blood clots.  You may even be prescribed some early strengthening or range of motion exercises.  Once you are discharged, you’ll commonly require re-assessment and checking of your progress.
